Baccarat
In punto banco — the form found at virtually every online casino — a player bets on one of three outcomes: Banker wins, Player wins, or Tie. Two hands are dealt according to fixed drawing rules and the hand closer to 9 wins. Cards 2–9 carry their face value, Aces count as 1, and 10s plus face cards count as 0. If a hand total exceeds 9, the tens digit is dropped — so 15 becomes 5.
House Edge and Bet Types
| Bet | House edge | Payout |
| Banker | 1.06% | 0.95:1 (5% commission) |
| Player | 1.24% | 1:1 |
| Tie | 14.36% | 8:1 |
| Player Pair / Banker Pair | ~10–11% | 11:1 |
The Banker bet carries the lowest edge of the three — 1.06% — because the drawing rules statistically favour the Banker position. The standard 5% commission on Banker wins accounts for that advantage; without it, the house would be at a disadvantage. No Commission / EZ-Baccarat variants alter this: under the “Super 6” rule (Banker wins with a total of 6 pay at 1:2 rather than even money), the Banker edge rises to around 1.46%.
The Tie bet at 8:1 carries a 14.36% edge. It wins around 9.5% of hands. The maths doesn’t improve in multiplier variants — Lightning Baccarat (Evolution) can pay up to 8× on standard bets and up to 512× on specific combinations, but the underlying Banker/Player/Tie odds are unchanged; variance is higher.
Baccarat Variants at Canadian Online Casinos
Standard punto banco is available in RNG and live formats at virtually every Ontario operator.
Live variants at Ontario operators:
- Speed Baccarat (Evolution) — ~27-second rounds
- Squeeze Baccarat — dealer or player slowly reveals cards for tension
- Lightning Baccarat (Evolution) — RNG multipliers up to 8× on standard bets; max on Tie with Lightning 512×
- Mega Baccarat (Pragmatic Play) — multipliers up to 100× on bet positions
- No Commission Baccarat
- Dragon Tiger — a two-card derivative where two cards (Dragon and Tiger) are dealt; player bets which is higher
RNG variants: Microgaming/Games Global, NetEnt, Playtech, Pragmatic Play — all widely available across Ontario operators and OLG.ca.
Software Providers for Baccarat in Canada
Evolution Gaming handles the majority of live baccarat across Ontario’s regulated market. Pragmatic Play Live’s Mega Baccarat is available at operators where Pragmatic supplies the live-casino integration. Playtech provides live baccarat at a smaller number of Ontario-facing sites. Ezugi (Evolution-owned) supplies additional dedicated tables at some operators.
Baccarat in the Regulated Ontario Market
Available across all major AGCO-licensed Ontario operators in both formats. OLG.ca carries live and RNG baccarat through its provider network. No Ontario-specific rule restrictions apply beyond 19+.
OLG’s PlaySmart responsible gambling portal cites the standard Banker/Player/Tie edges (1.06%, 1.24%, 14.36%) as a player education resource — a useful external reference that reflects the same figures used here.
Players in other provinces access baccarat through their provincial Crown site or offshore-licensed operators.
Suitable for players who want a low-edge game that requires no decisions; suits players who prefer fast table play or larger stakes; the Banker bet’s 1.06% edge makes it one of the lower house-edge wagers available in a casino environment.
